SCADA / OT · One of eight disciplines

Bringing plant and OT data into the building picture

OT connectivity, protocol gateways and integration with the Honeywell BMS and command rooms — so the facility team sees generators, UPS, pumps and process equipment alongside the building systems ESC already delivers.

Operational technology, integrated

SCADA and OT connectivity as part of the integration platform

Most facilities have equipment that lives outside the building management system: generators and switchgear with their own controllers, UPS and ATS with vendor panels, pumps, treatment plant or process equipment on a SCADA network. ESC's SCADA / OT discipline connects that equipment to the same supervisory layer and command rooms as the fire, security and BMS systems, using protocol gateways and segmented networks rather than another standalone screen.

The scope is deliberately practical: identify the OT data the facility needs, agree the interface with the equipment vendor, provide the gateway and the network path, and present the points in the Honeywell BMS on the Niagara Framework or the command-room platform. ESC delivers this as one of its eight core engineering disciplines, alongside fire and life safety, BMS, security, physical security, data centers, ICT and IPTV, on projects where a single integrator is asked to own the whole picture.

What the SCADA / OT discipline delivers

Connectivity and integration for equipment the building team needs to see, without replacing the vendor's own controls.

01

OT connectivity

Network paths from plant rooms, substations and process areas to the supervisory layer, designed with segmentation between operational and corporate networks and delivered with ESC's ICT package.

02

Protocol gateways

Modbus, BACnet and OPC gateways that translate vendor controllers — generators, switchgear, UPS, ATS, chillers, pumps — into points the BMS and command room can monitor and trend.

Integration with Honeywell BMS

OT points presented on the Honeywell BMS on the Niagara Framework with alarms, trend logs and operator graphics, so mechanical, electrical and process status share one platform.

Command-room presentation

OT alarms and status alongside fire, security and building events in the command centre, with the same priorities, escalation and audit history as the rest of the facility.

Generator, UPS and ATS status into the BMS, and the fire cause-and-effect interfaces to plant that must shut down or change state on an alarm, tested end to end with the fire system.

Questions consultants ask

SCADA / OT — frequently asked

Does ESC replace the vendor's SCADA or controllers?
No. ESC connects the vendor's equipment to the supervisory layer through gateways and agreed interfaces. The equipment keeps its own controls; the BMS and command room gain visibility and, where specified, supervisory commands.
Which protocols are used for OT integration?
Modbus and BACnet for most plant and electrical equipment, and OPC where the source system provides it. The protocol for each interface is recorded in the interface register agreed during design.
How are OT and corporate networks kept apart?
The OT network is designed as its own segment with controlled paths to the BMS and command room, delivered with ESC's ICT package. The segmentation is documented in the network architecture drawing.
